I’ve just returned from a 10 day journey focused on the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Nestled between tropical dry forest and too many unspoiled beaches to count, there are a number of small towns and hotels I wanted to explore and better understand for my clients. I partnered with my “go to” supplier for Central America, Rico Tours, to create a customized itinerary for my family’s 2015 spring break trip.
My first stop was Hotel Punta Islita, a legendary Virtuoso property that proved to be just as special as I’d always heard. To get there, I chartered a plane to fly my family directly from Liberia to the hotel in order to avoid a multi-hour ground transfer. It was an exciting and memorable way to arrive! The views were stunning, and as we landed on a small airstrip in the middle of an open field, I knew we were in for a treat.
Hotel Punta Islita is set on a dramatic mountain-side and offers guests breath-taking views of the secluded beach below. Checking in was one of those “wow” moments – our personal concierge Erroll greeted us warmly, offering us cool towels and a delicious tropical drink. We were escorted to a couch in their lobby to relax and learn more about the numerous activities the hotel has to offer, all while we took in the unbelievable views below.
I booked a two bedroom villa with a private pool for my family, which was spacious and comfortable for the four of us. We enjoyed many morning swims there, taking in the ocean views and watching small groups of scarlet macaws fly above us – amazing….
Couples have a number of different bungalow type accommodations to choose from, all of them private and romantic. The hotel does an excellent job of catering to both families and couples. There was a definite mix of both while I was there, and all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.
There are many excursions available for guests to book at Hotel Punta Islita– most of them nearby, which is a huge bonus. For my family, the zip-line course right on property was a highlight of our trip. The guides were fantastic and the course was perfect for us – not too scary but plenty exciting.
We also booked a kayak tour that took us down a scenic river, ending where the river and the ocean met – an incredible experience. Along the way, we saw howler monkeys, toucans, and many other types of birds. Surfing lessons were another adventure my husband and son are still talking about!
The food on property was excellent, and I loved the warm and attentive staff. Between the great service, lovely facilities and spa, and many activities offered, Hotel Punta Islita delivers an exceptional, luxury Costa Rican experience. Here are the Virtuoso amenities my clients receive when I make their arrangements:
