I’ve just returned from a wonderful post-Christmas trip to New York City with my family. When I started making plans to visit the Big Apple, I didn’t have to think long about where I wanted to stay. I’ve been intrigued by Ritz Carlton’s boutique EDITION hotels for awhile now, especially the newest one to come onto the scene, The New York EDITION. The hotel opened last May and has received a warm welcome in a highly competitive city due to its top notch rooms, service and overall cool, yet unpretentious vibe.
One of the biggest draws of The New York EDITION is its location in the Flatiron District – central to all of NYC but not in the mayhem of Midtown. There are so many great shops, restaurants, and sites within walking distance and the area has a true neighborhood feel to it that’s not touristy at all. Madison Square Park is right across the street, as is the original Shake Shack, the mega (and awesome) Italian eatery Eataly, and a flagship Lego store my children didn’t want to leave! Additionally, there’s a subway station right across the street from the hotel, so the rest of the city is a quick train ride away if you’re not opting for Uber or a taxi.
The New York EDITION resides within a historic clock tower that served as headquarters for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for almost 100 years. It’s a truly spectacular setting I’ve not seen anywhere else – modern meets historic in just the right way. The designers carefully preserved all the key aspects of the original building and seamlessly blended them with sleek furnishings and trendy design.
The 273 rooms are located on 41 floors with unparalleled views of the nearby Empire State building and dramatic New York City skyline. I would describe the decor as chic and contemporary, yet warm and welcoming. The bathrooms are well-appointed with all of the bells and whistles one expects of a luxury five-star hotel. Families will be pleased to know there are quite a few sets of connecting rooms available, which the hotel will guarantee at time of booking.
Locals and guests alike frequent the swanky hotel lobby bar where cocktails are served by friendly bartenders. One floor up (which can be accessed via a funky spiral staircase) is the Gold Bar and billiards room, where you can relax before or after dining at the highly acclaimed restaurant appropriately named The Clocktower. The common areas are central to the EDITION brand and very unique in that they are “happening” yet completely laid-back. My children fit right in at the lobby lounge and were served yummy Shirley Temples as my husband and I enjoyed our martinis in a beautiful setting. Everyone was happy!
I leveraged the extremely knowledgable concierge team at The New York EDITION to design an itinerary for my family that maximized our time in the city, but at a pace appropriate for my children’s ages. We visited the Freedom Tower Observatory (incredible), Chinatown, the Museum of Natural History, Rockefeller Center, American Girl, and much more. The concierge team also made fantastic restaurant recommendations, all within walking distance of the hotel.

- Room upgrade at time of check-in, subject to availability
- Full breakfast for two daily via room service or the Lobby Bar (up to $60 daily value)
